In 1969, I received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from Fordham University. I served in the United States Army in Viet Nam from 1970 to 1972 where I was stationed in Chu Lai and Da Nang.  I received the Bronze Star, Army Commendation with “V” for Valor, Combat Infantryman Badge and Air Medal along with the standard campaign medals for service in a foreign country.

 

In 1972, I enrolled in Fordham University Graduate School at Lincoln Center where I received my Teacher’s Certification in Education.  I was employed as a Court Officer in New York State Criminal Court from 1972 through 1976, achieving the rank of Captain.  I was promoted in 1976 to Senior Court Officer in Supreme Court where I advanced to the rank of Sergeant.  I attended law school and graduated from New York Law School in 1994. In June of 1994, I was admitted to the New York State Bar by the Appellate Division, Second Department and am now also admitted in the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York as well as the United States Supreme Court. 


From 1994 to 1996, I was employed at Vellela, Vellela , Basso & Calandra.  In 1996, I formed my own law firm, William T. Shepard, P.C.  The bulk of my practice relates to trust and estate matters.  I have been retained and consulted by numerous law firms to advise/practice in an “of counsel” capacity handling an increasing number of probate, administration and kinship matters.  I have served on the New York Surrogates’ list of “approved” attorneys for appointment as Guardian ad Litem in New York, Kings, Bronx, Westchester, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk Counties in Accountings, Probate, Guardianship, Article 17A and Miscellaneous Proceedings.  I have completed the Guardian ad Litem training course sponsored by the New York State Unified Court System.  To date, I have been appointed Guardian ad Litem in over 500 cases. 


I have also served on the New York State Supreme Court’s list of “approved” attorneys to be appointed as Court Evaluator and Guardian.  I have been appointed Court Evaluator and Guardian in more than 50 cases.  In connection with these appointments I have completed the requisite training course sponsored by the New York State Unified Court System for court evaluator, guardian and court examiner.
